Sandra Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Arlington, Virginia, to opera singer Helga Meyer and Army officer John Bullock. She spent part of her childhood in Nuremberg, Germany, and spoke German before pursuing acting in the United States. After studying drama at East Carolina University, she moved to New York, where she took acting classes and worked in small productions. Her early screen appearances included the television film Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the comedy Hangmen. A supporting role in Demolition Man, released in 1993, helped introduce her to wider theatrical audiences and major studios.

Her breakthrough came with Speed (1994), in which she played Annie Porter, a passenger forced to drive a city bus kept above 50 miles per hour by a bomb. Opposite Keanu Reeves, Bullock gave the thriller an energetic, relatable center, and the film became a major commercial success. She followed it with romantic comedies and dramas, including While You Were Sleeping (1995), which earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and A Time to Kill (1996). In 1998, she starred in Hope Floats and Practical Magic, sharing the latter with Nicole Kidman. These films established her range beyond action roles too.

Bullock returned to action with Miss Congeniality (2000), playing FBI agent Gracie Hart, who infiltrates a beauty pageant after a terrorist threat. She produced the film and reprised the character in its 2005 sequel. Her performance in Crash (2004), an ensemble drama directed by Paul Haggis, contributed to the movie's Best Picture victory at the Academy Awards. She then appeared in The Lake House (2006), opposite Reeves, and the comedy The Proposal (2009), with Ryan Reynolds. The Proposal became one of her notable romantic-comedy successes, while her production work expanded her influence behind the camera in Hollywood long afterward too.

Her most acclaimed period began with The Blind Side (2009), based on Michael Lewis's book about Michael Oher. Bullock played Leigh Anne Tuohy and won the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as a Golden Globe. She earned another Oscar nomination for Gravity (2013), portraying astronaut Ryan Stone opposite George Clooney in Alfonso Cuarón's technically ambitious space thriller. In 2018, she led the heist comedy Ocean's 8 as Debbie Ocean and starred in the post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box, which became a major Netflix release. Bullock also appeared in The Unforgivable (2021), continuing her career through varied roles and producing.
