Nicola Coughlan is an Irish actor born in Galway, Ireland, on 9 January 1987. She studied English and Classical Civilisation at the National University of Ireland, Galway, then trained at the Oxford School of Drama and Birmingham School of Acting. Her earliest credited film appearance was as “Girl” in Tom Collins’s 2009 film My Brother’s War. Before television made her widely familiar, she developed stage experience, including Jess and Joe Forever at the Edinburgh Fringe. Coughlan has spoken publicly about the precarious period before her breakthrough, when she worked part-time at an optician in Galway while continuing to audition. Those credits show her working. Coughlan reached a much larger audience as Clare Devlin in Channel 4’s Derry Girls. Lisa McGee’s comedy follows five teenagers and one English boy during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. Clare is the anxious, highly articulate member of the friendship group, and Coughlan played her throughout all three series, broadcast between 2018 and 2022.
