Kunihiko Ikuhara

Kunihiko Ikuhara is a Japanese animation director, writer, and producer whose career is closely associated with stylized television anime that combines melodrama, symbolism, comedy, and recurring images of transformation and social constraint. Born on December 21, 1964, in Osaka Prefecture, he joined Toei Animation in the 1980s. His early work there included episode direction and series direction on the Sailor Moon franchise, based on Naoko Takeuchi’s manga. He directed the television series Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS, and directed the 1993 film Sailor Moon R: The Movie.

After leaving Toei, Ikuhara became the central creative force behind Revolutionary Girl Utena, a 1997–1998 television series produced by J.C.Staff and created with Be-Papas, the collective he helped form. The story follows Utena Tenjou, a girl who wants to become a prince, at Ohtori Academy. Her duels over the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya, turn an academy drama into an examination of power, gender, possession, and adolescence. Ikuhara also directed the 1999 feature Adolescence of Utena, which radically reworks the television narrative.

Following a long gap in television directing, he returned with 2011’s Mawaru Penguindrum. The original series centers on siblings Kanba and Shoma Takakura, who must seek the “Penguindrum” after their terminally ill sister Himari is temporarily revived by a mysterious penguin hat. Its plot invokes the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack and engages with family, fate, and the burdens inherited by children.

Ikuhara later directed Yurikuma Arashi (2015), an original series about bears and human girls whose world is divided by a “Wall of Severance”; it uses its fable-like setting to address exclusion and lesbian desire. Sarazanmai (2019) follows three boys transformed into kappa by the kappa-like Keppi and sent to collect shirikodama from zombies; its action in Asakusa is tied to secrets, desire, and connection.

In 2022, he returned to Penguindrum through Re:cycle of the Penguindrum, a two-part compilation film project with newly animated material and revised narrative elements. Across these projects, Ikuhara has repeatedly used repeated phrases, theatrical staging, musical interludes, and emblematic objects—roses, rings, penguins, bears, and kappa—to organize stories around characters seeking escape from systems that define their roles. His later originals were made with different studios: Mawaru Penguindrum was animated by Brain’s Base, Yurikuma Arashi by Silver Link, and Sarazanmai by MAPPA and Lapin Track. These collaborations underscore his sustained presence in original television animation.
