Hyun Bin, born Kim Tae-pyung on September 25, 1982, in Seoul, is a South Korean actor whose career has moved between television melodramas, romantic comedies, action films, and historical dramas. He made his acting debut in the 2003 television series Bodyguard, followed by appearances in the sitcom Nonstop 4 and the youth drama Ireland in 2004.
His breakthrough came with My Lovely Sam Soon in 2005. Playing restaurant owner Hyun Jin-heon opposite Kim Sun-a, Hyun Bin became widely recognized for combining reserved charm with comic timing. He followed that success with Snow Queen in 2006 and Worlds Within in 2008, a drama about television producers that paired him with Song Hye-kyo.
In 2010, Hyun Bin starred as department-store executive Kim Joo-won in Secret Garden. The fantasy romance, in which his character and Ha Ji-won’s stuntwoman exchange bodies, became a major hit and earned him the Grand Prize, or Daesang, at the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards. He enlisted in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps in March 2011 and completed his service in December 2012.
After returning, he appeared in the period film The Fatal Encounter in 2014 and the television drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me in 2015. His film career expanded with the action comedy Confidential Assignment in 2017, where he played North Korean detective Rim Chul-ryung, and the historical action film Rampant in 2018. He also appeared opposite Son Ye-jin in the crime thriller The Negotiation.
Hyun Bin reached an international audience through Crash Landing on You, which aired from December 2019 to February 2020. He portrayed Ri Jeong-hyeok, a North Korean captain who shelters a South Korean heiress, played by Son Ye-jin, after a paragliding accident carries her across the border. The series became one of the most widely discussed Korean dramas worldwide and strengthened his status as a leading actor.
He reunited with Son Ye-jin in Confidential Assignment 2: International, released in 2022, reprising his role as Rim Chul-ryung. The same year, he married Son Ye-jin; they later welcomed a son. Hyun Bin subsequently starred in the historical action film Harbin, portraying independence activist Ahn Jung-geun. His work is marked by a progression from television romance to physically demanding, internationally distributed film and drama roles.
