Harriet Walter

Harriet Walter is an English actor whose career has moved repeatedly between classical theatre, film, and television. Born in London on 24 September 1950, she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and became particularly associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her Shakespearean parts include Viola in Twelfth Night, Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra, and Lady Macbeth opposite Antony Sher in the RSC’s 1999 production of Macbeth. The latter staging, directed by Gregory Doran, was filmed for television. Walter won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in 1988, for playing Masha in the RSC’s Three Sisters. Chekhov has remained central to her stage work: she played Arkadina in The Seagull and appeared as Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard. In 2011, she played Brutus in Phyllida Lloyd’s female Donmar Warehouse production of Julius Caesar, an interpretation later seen at St Ann’s Warehouse in New York. Walter returned to Lloyd’s project as Henry IV in Henry IV and as Prospero in The Tempest. On screen, Walter played Fanny Dashwood in Ang Lee’s 1995 film Sense and Sensibility, adapted by Emma Thompson from Jane Austen’s novel. She appeared as Lady Shackleton in Downton Abbey and as Caroline Collingwood, Logan Roy’s ex-wife and the mother of Kendall, Roman, and Shiv, in the HBO drama Succession. In the show’s fourth and final season, Caroline presides over a disastrous wedding gathering and delivers cutting observations about her children, scenes that brought Walter to a wider international audience. She played the Soviet operative Dasha in the third season of Killing Eve and portrayed Clementine Churchill in the fifth season of Netflix’s The Crown. Her film credits also include The Young Victoria, in which she played Queen Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent. Walter has written about the pressures surrounding women’s appearance and age on screen and stage. Her 2018 book, Facing It: Reflections on Images of Older Women, combines memoir, commentary, and interviews in considering the limited cultural images available to older women. In 2024, she published She Speaks!: The Power of Women’s Voices, a book examining female speech and silence through history, literature, and her own experience. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011 for services to drama. The 2024 New Year Honours made her a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama and charity. Walter married fellow actor Guy Paul in 2011.
