Gen Urobuchi

Gen Urobuchi is a Japanese novelist and screenwriter closely associated with the visual-novel company Nitroplus. Born in 1972, he joined Nitroplus after working in the game industry and became known for writing stories that combine genre spectacle with moral pressure, tragedy, and institutional conflict. His early work for the company included Phantom of Inferno, a 2000 visual novel about an amnesiac Japanese man coerced into becoming an assassin for the American criminal organization Inferno. Urobuchi later wrote the novelization Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, and the property was adapted into a 2009 television anime.

Among his most discussed Nitroplus titles is Saya no Uta (2003), illustrated by Chuuji, in which medical student Fuminori Sakisaka survives an accident but perceives the world as flesh and decay; the only person he sees as beautiful is Saya. Outside games, Urobuchi wrote Fate/Zero, a light-novel prequel to Type-Moon’s Fate/stay night. Published from 2006 to 2007, it follows the Fourth Holy Grail War, focusing especially on Kiritsugu Emiya, Saber, and the rival magi and servants summoned to Fuyuki City. Studio ufotable’s anime adaptation aired in 2011 and 2012, introducing his version of the conflict to a much wider audience.

Urobuchi served as the principal writer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the 2011 original television anime directed by Akiyuki Shinbo and produced by Shaft. The series begins with middle-school students Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki being offered contracts by the creature Kyubey, then reveals the cost borne by magical girls and the cosmological consequences of Homura Akemi’s repeated attempts to save Madoka. Urobuchi returned for the screenplay of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion (2013).

He was credited with the original story for Psycho-Pass, Production I.G’s 2012 dystopian anime, whose Sibyl System quantifies citizens’ psychological states and authorizes Inspectors and Enforcers to pursue people judged likely to commit crime. His later projects include Thunderbolt Fantasy, a Taiwanese glove-puppetry series for which he wrote the story and scripts, beginning in 2016, and the screenplay for the 2017 anime film Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. It launched a trilogy completed by City on the Edge of Battle and The Planet Eater in 2018, both also scripted by Urobuchi. He also created the original story for 2013’s anime Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Urobuchi also provided the original concept and series composition for 2014’s Aldnoah.Zero, whose Mars-versus-Earth war is precipitated by an assassination attempt on Princess Asseylum during a parade.
