Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro Oda was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto, Japan. He has said that he decided to become a manga artist at age four after watching the animated series Vicky the Viking. As a teenager, he submitted manga to contests and received recognition for Wanted!, a one-shot later collected in his 1998 volume Wanted!. In 1994, he began working as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Rurouni Kenshin. Oda contributed to work including Watsuki’s manga while developing his own pirate ideas. His early “Romance Dawn” one-shots introduced a version of Monkey D. Luffy, the rubber-bodied protagonist who would lead One Piece. One Piece began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. Its central premise follows Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates as they sail the Grand Line seeking the legendary treasure called the One Piece and Luffy’s goal of becoming Pirate King. The series builds its world around Devil Fruits, which grant unusual abilities at the cost of the ability to swim, and around a political order dominated by the World Government and Marines. Luffy’s first core crewmates include swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, sniper Usopp, and cook Sanji. Rather than merely repeating a voyage formula, Oda has used long-running plot threads such as the Void Century, the Will of D., the ancient weapons, and the poneglyphs to connect distant arcs. He has also written major conflicts involving characters including Portgas D. Ace, Nico Robin, Trafalgar Law, and the Four Emperors. The manga’s story has moved from East Blue through Alabasta, Skypiea, Water Seven, Marineford, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and Egghead. Oda announced in 2022 that the manga would resume after a four-week break as it entered its “final saga”; he subsequently continued publishing the series. The television anime adaptation produced by Toei Animation premiered in Japan in 1999. Oda’s work has expanded into films, games, merchandise, and other media, but the manga remains the foundation of the franchise. In 2015, Guinness World Records recognized Oda for “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.” That recognition reflected One Piece’s circulation as reported by its publisher. In 2022, Oda supervised the release of One Piece Film: Red, a feature centered on Uta, a singer connected to Shanks. Netflix released a live-action One Piece adaptation in 2023; Oda served as an executive producer and supported the project.
