Spider Man Into the Spider Verse

Animated 2018 film follows Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales, who becomes Spider-Man and joins alternate-universe Spider-People to stop Kingpin from destroying reality itself.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a 2018 animated feature produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, and released by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, from a screenplay credited to Phil Lord and Rothman. The film centers on Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, a Brooklyn teenager attending the elite Visions Academy at his father’s insistence. Miles is bitten by a genetically altered spider while visiting an abandoned subway tunnel, then develops powers including wall-crawling, camouflage, and a venom strike. His father, Jefferson Davis, is a police officer voiced by Brian Tyree Henry, while his mother Rio, voiced by Luna Lauren Vélez, recognizes changes in him but does not initially know their cause. After witnessing Wilson Fisk’s Super Collider, Miles sees the death of his universe’s Peter Parker, voiced by Chris Pine. Fisk built the collider beneath Alchemax to bring back his wife and daughter, who died in a car crash after leaving him. The experiment pulls spider-powered people from other dimensions into Miles’s New York. Chief among them is an older, disillusioned Peter B. Parker, voiced by Jake Johnson, who becomes Miles’s reluctant mentor. The visitors also include Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld; Spider-Man Noir, voiced by Nicolas Cage; Peni Parker, voiced by Kimiko Glenn; and Peter Porker/Spider-Ham, voiced by John Mulaney. Because their atoms are destabilizing outside their home realities, the group must stop Fisk and use a replacement “goober” device to return everyone before the collider destroys the city. The film’s visual approach combines computer animation with comic-book devices: Ben-Day dots, halftone textures, captions, split screens, onomatopoeia, and deliberately varied animation styles for the different Spider-characters. Its soundtrack includes Post Malone and Swae Lee’s “Sunflower,” which became closely associated with the film. Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, defeating Pixar’s Incredibles 2 and Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet. It also received the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. Its story ends with Miles mastering a leap of faith, defeating Fisk, sending the displaced heroes home, and hearing Gwen contact him across dimensions. A sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, followed in 2023, continuing Miles’s multiversal adventures and introducing additional versions of Spider-Man. The original film was widely praised for its bold visual design and emotional focus on Miles as a new hero.
