Bam-Bam Rubble

Bam-Bam Rubble is the super-strong toddler of the animated Stone Age suburb Bedrock, created for Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones. He first appeared in the 1963 episode “No Help Wanted,” during the series’ third season, when Barney and Betty Rubble discover an abandoned baby outside their home. The child’s extraordinary strength is established immediately: he can smash furniture and throw heavy objects while cheerfully shouting “Bam! Bam!” His name comes from that catchphrase. After the infant disrupts the orphanage with his strength, the Rubbles decide to adopt him permanently, and the episode ends with the family accepting its new son in Bedrock. Unlike Pebbles Flintstone, the daughter of the Rubbles’ neighbors Fred and Wilma, Bam-Bam began as a baby but was aged up for The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, a 1971 Hanna-Barbera series. In that program he and Pebbles are teenagers attending Bedrock High School, and their friendship becomes its central relationship. The show moves pair beyond parents’ stories, following school, dates, and music with friends such as Moonrock, Wiggy, Penny, and Schleprock. Bam-Bam’s power remains part of the character, although the teenage version is presented as gentler and self-conscious than the destructive infant. The Flintstones had placed him in its ensemble. Adult versions of Pebbles and Bam-Bam appeared in the 1980 television film The Flintstones: The Wedding, in which their engagement and ceremony drive the story. They marry in the following year’s The Flintstones: I Yabba-Dabba Do!, a special that sends the newlyweds to Hollyrock, the Hollywood parody. Their life continues in Hollyrock-a-Bye Baby, released in 1993, where Pebbles gives birth to twins Chip and Roxy. In these productions Bam-Bam is no longer the baby identified by a cry; he is portrayed as Pebbles’s husband and, later, the father of their children. The character spans several Flintstones eras and age ranges. Don Messick supplied Bam-Bam’s voice in his early Flintstones appearances. Messick was a Hanna-Barbera performer, known for voices including Scooby-Doo’s Scrappy-Doo and the Ranger Smith character in Yogi Bear cartoons. For the teenage Bamm-Bamm of The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, the role was voiced by Jay North, the former child actor associated with television’s Dennis the Menace. The spelling “Bamm-Bamm” is used in the later show’s title, while “Bam-Bam” commonly identifies the infant character. Across those appearances, the repeated name, unusual adoption origin, exceptional strength, and long connection with Pebbles distinguish him from the Rubbles who raised him.
