Reluctant Dounguard fits best in a white go-wide or token-based deck that can consistently trigger its counter‑removal ability by playing multiple creatures in succession, such as a Selesnya counters deck or a white weenie build that curves out with cheap creatures; however, even in those shells it is generally underpowered because it enters as a 0/2 for three mana and requires additional setup just to become a reasonable body, making it too slow and low-impact for most formats. In casual counter-synergy decks (especially ones that manipulate -1/-1 counters) it can function as a gradual value creature, but in most competitive environments there are far stronger three-drops—such as Adeline, Resplendent Cathar for go-wide strategies, Luminarch Aspirant for counter synergy, or even baseline efficient creatures like Brimaz, King of Oreskos (format permitting)—all of which provide immediate board impact without needing multiple follow-up creatures to be effective; as a result, Reluctant Dou
