A deck that focuses on stalling the game and controlling the board would benefit from using Dark Depths, as it provides a powerful win condition once all the ice counters are removed. However, in competitive formats, there are better options such as Thespian's Stage which can copy Dark Depths and instantly create Marit Lage without the need to wait for the ice counters to be removed. Dark Depths can still see play in certain strategies, but its effectiveness may vary depending on the overall game plan of the deck.

Dark Depths really is a land with no mana ability. It doesn’t tap for colorless mana.

If Dark Depths leaves the battlefield before its triggered ability resolves, you won’t be able to sacrifice it, so you won’t create Marit Lage.
