“Rebelde” is a Brazilian teen telenovela produced by RecordTV and adapted from the Mexican series that Televisa aired from 2004 to 2006. The Brazilian version premiered on Record on March 21, 2011, and was created by writer Margareth Boury. Its setting is Elite Way School, a boarding school where students from privileged families study alongside scholarship students. The story follows six teenagers whose backgrounds, ambitions, and family conflicts bring them together, while romance, rivalry, bullying, and music drive the drama. Although it uses the Mexican format as its starting point, the adaptation gave its characters Brazilian names and a storyline.
The six students are Alice Albuquerque, Pedro Costa, Carla Campos, Diego Maldonado, Roberta Messi, and Tomás Penedo. Sophia Abrahão played Alice, Micael Borges played Pedro, Melanie Fronckowiak played Carla, Arthur Aguiar played Diego, Lua Blanco played Roberta, and Chay Suede played Tomás. Their relationships form the show’s core: Alice and Pedro become a couple despite the tension between their families, while Carla and Tomás develop a romance. Roberta and Diego are paired through a turbulent relationship shaped by pride and jealousy. The ensemble also includes characters such as Jonas, the headmaster of Elite Way, and Vicente, a teacher who supports the students.
Music is not a subplot in Rebelde Brasil. The six leads form the band Rebeldes, reflecting the narrative’s focus on students who use performance to express themselves and challenge expectations. The group’s repertoire included songs associated with the series, including “Do Jeito Que Eu Sou,” “Livre Pra Viver,” “Tchau Pra Você,” and “Depois da Chuva.” Record’s music division released the band’s debut album, Rebeldes, in 2011, and the cast performed concerts in Brazil. The project generated a second album, Meu Jeito, Sua Forma, released in 2012. These releases connected the television storyline to the performers’ careers as recording and touring artists.
Rebelde Brasil ran for two seasons, ending in 2012 after 410 episodes, according to broadcast records. Its popularity made the cast recognized in Brazil, particularly Lua Blanco, Arthur Aguiar, Sophia Abrahão, Micael Borges, Melanie Fronckowiak, and Chay Suede. Several later pursued careers in music, acting, or both; Arthur Aguiar won Big Brother Brasil 22 in 2022. The series remains distinct from Mexican Rebelde because it was an adaptation made for RecordTV, used Portuguese dialogue, and built its musical identity around Rebeldes. Its combination of school melodrama and released pop established it as one of Record’s youth productions.
