Thomas Doherty is a Scottish actor, singer, and dancer born on 21 April 1995 in Edinburgh. He attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh and later studied musical theatre at the MGA Academy of Performing Arts. Before becoming widely known on screen, Doherty worked in entertainment roles that included singing, dancing, and performing in stage productions. His early training helped establish the combination of acting, movement, and music that has characterized several of his later roles.
Doherty gained international attention as Harry Hook in Disney Channel’s “Descendants 2,” released in 2017, and “Descendants 3,” released in 2019. Harry is the son of Captain Hook and one of the pirate crew members connected with Uma, played by China Anne McClain. Doherty’s performance gave the character a theatrical, swaggering presence, while the films’ musical numbers allowed him to use his dance and singing experience. He also appeared in the “Descendants” television universe through related promotional and musical material.
In 2016, Doherty joined the cast of the Disney Channel series “The Lodge” as Sean Matthews. The British musical drama follows teenagers at a rural Northern Ireland lodge, where friendships, family disputes, romance, and performances drive the story. Doherty later played Sebastian, a centuries-old vampire, in the third season of The CW’s “Legacies,” a “The Vampire Diaries” universe series. Sebastian’s storyline involved his difficult relationship with modern life and his connection to Lizzie Saltzman.
Doherty appeared as Liam in the 2020 Hulu series “High Fidelity,” starring Zoë Kravitz as Rob, a record-store owner revisiting past relationships. In 2021, he became part of HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” continuation as Max Wolfe. Max is a sexually confident student at Constance Billard and St. Jude’s who becomes involved in the show’s romantic and social conflicts. Doherty’s role continued through the series’ two seasons, which concluded in 2023.
His film work includes “The Invitation,” a 2022 gothic horror movie directed by Jessica M. Thompson. Doherty plays Walter De Ville, a mysterious aristocrat whose invitation draws Evie, portrayed by Nathalie Emmanuel, into an unsettling family gathering in England. The film reimagines elements of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” while placing its central conflict in a contemporary setting.
Across these projects, Doherty has moved between Disney musical fantasy, television drama, young-adult supernatural fiction, romantic comedy-drama, and gothic horror. His best-known characters—Harry Hook, Sebastian, and Max Wolfe—are distinct in setting and tone, but each depends on the performer’s ability to combine charm with volatility. His career remains closely associated with screen roles that make room for performance, style, and complicated romantic or social relationships.
