Judi Dench was born on December 9, 1934, in York, England, to Reginald, a doctor, and Eleanor, who had Irish ancestry. Her father worked as a physician at York Theatre Royal, where young Dench encountered performers and backstage life. That connection directed her toward acting after training as a designer.
In 1957, she made her professional stage debut with the Old Vic company as Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Her early theatre career included classical roles, and she became associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company. At the RSC, she played leading parts including Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra, establishing her lasting reputation.
Dench expanded her screen career through British television and film, but stage work remained central. She won a BAFTA for portraying teacher Jean Brodie in the 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The role showed her ability to make a confident character charismatic and unsettling, rather than sympathetic.
International audiences later recognized Dench as M, James Bond's superior, beginning with GoldenEye in 1995. She continued in the role through eight Bond films, including Casino Royale and Skyfall. Her M transcended administration: Dench gave the character clipped authority, dry humor, and emotional force, particularly after M's death in Skyfall.
Her film work also included Shakespeare adaptations and unexpected comic performances. In 1998, she played Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, a brief appearance that won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She became the oldest Oscar acting winner, and her acceptance speech thanked the film's writers.
Dench received another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown, released in 1997. She earned praise for bringing reserve and vulnerability to the monarch's relationship with Scottish servant John Brown. Later, in 2005, she played a controlled teacher in Notes on a Scandal, opposite Cate Blanchett.
Her career was not confined to prestige drama. She voiced Mrs Calloway, a protective cow, in the animated film Home on the Range, and she appeared as eccentric writer Evelyn Greenslade in Ladies in Lavender. She also played Miss Matilda Jenkins in the family film Nanny McPhee, opposite Emma Thompson.
Beyond acting, Dench has recorded poetry, narrated documentaries, and supported conservation causes, including the protection of ancient trees. Her memoirs and interviews describe macular degeneration; she has continued working despite it. In 2022, she appeared in Belfast, Kenneth Branagh's autobiographical film, as Buddy's grandmother onscreen, a stern but loving presence.
