Denis Villeneuve was born on October 3, 1967, in Gentilly, Quebec. He studied filmmaking at the Université du Québec à Montréal and began his feature-film career with *August 32nd on Earth* (1998). His second feature, *Maelström* (2000), follows a woman struggling with guilt after a fatal hit-and-run. Both films represented Canada in the race for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, though neither received a nomination.
After several years away from feature directing, Villeneuve made *Polytechnique* (2009), a drama about the 1989 massacre of women at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. He followed it with *Incendies* (2010), adapted from a play by Wajdi Mouawad. In that film, twins investigate their mother’s past in the Middle East after her death. *Incendies* earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and helped bring Villeneuve’s work to a wider international audience.
His first English-language feature was *Prisoners* (2013), a thriller starring Hugh Jackman as a father whose daughter disappears and Jake Gyllenhaal as the detective investigating the case. Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal worked together again on *Enemy* (2013), in which an actor discovers a man who looks exactly like him. Villeneuve then directed *Sicario* (2015), with Emily Blunt playing an FBI agent drawn into a covert operation against a Mexican drug cartel.
In *Arrival* (2016), Amy Adams plays linguist Louise Banks, who tries to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors. The screenplay adapts Ted Chiang’s story “Story of Your Life,” and the film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Villeneuve next directed *Blade Runner 2049* (2017), a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 film. Ryan Gosling plays a replicant hunter called K, while Harrison Ford returns as Rick Deckard. The film won the Academy Award for cinematography, giving Roger Deakins his first Oscar in that category.
Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s *Dune* was released in 2021. Set largely on the desert planet Arrakis, it stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, whose family takes control of the planet’s valuable spice production. The film won six Academy Awards, including prizes for its score, visual effects and cinematography. Villeneuve continued the story in *Dune: Part Two* (2024), which follows Paul’s alliance with the Fremen and his relationship with Chani, played by Zendaya. Across the two films, he brought Herbert’s political struggle over Arrakis and Paul’s contested destiny to cinema on an unusually large scale.
