The Beatles were an English rock group formed in Liverpool in 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and, after several lineup changes, Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney had begun performing together in 1957, while Harrison joined soon afterward. The band developed in Liverpool’s Cavern Club and during demanding residencies in Hamburg, West Germany, where repeated live performances sharpened their musicianship and stagecraft. In 1962, manager Brian Epstein secured a recording contract with Parlophone, and producer George Martin became an important creative collaborator.

The Beatles released “Love Me Do” in 1962, but their breakthrough came with “Please Please Me” and its number-one success in Britain. By 1964, Beatlemania had spread internationally. Their appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” on February 9, 1964, drew an enormous American television audience and helped establish the group as a defining force in popular culture. Films such as “A Hard Day’s Night” presented a witty, energetic public image, while the soundtrack showed Martin and the band expanding the possibilities of concise pop songwriting.

Their music changed rapidly. “Rubber Soul” (1965) introduced more introspective writing and broader instrumental colors, while “Revolver” (1966) combined Indian music, tape manipulation, orchestral textures, and studio experimentation. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1967) used a fictional performing group to frame an album built as a colorful studio production. Songs including “A Day in the Life” demonstrated the contrast between Lennon’s surreal observations and McCartney’s melodic, theatrical approach. Harrison’s “Within You Without You” also reflected the Beatles’ engagement with Indian musical ideas and philosophy.

In 1968, the double album “The Beatles,” commonly called the White Album, displayed an unusually wide range of styles, from acoustic songs to heavy rock and avant-garde passages. The animated film and album “Yellow Submarine” followed in 1969, alongside the group’s increasingly complicated personal and business relationships. Their final recorded album, “Abbey Road,” featured carefully arranged songs, George Harrison’s “Something,” and the famous medley on side two. The rooftop concert at Apple Corps headquarters in London on January 30, 1969, became their last public performance as a group.

The Beatles formally dissolved in 1970, after “Let It Be” was released. Their catalog continued to shape rock, pop, recording technology, and songwriting. Lennon pursued solo work and peace activism; McCartney formed Wings; Harrison recorded influential solo albums; and Starr became a successful drummer, actor, and solo performer. Their partnership remains one of popular music’s most influential creative achievements.
